Clara Lee Brown – Associate Professor, Theory and Practice in Teacher Education With Julie Tyler, UTK Ph.D Candidate, English & Pam Sims, Supervisor of Instructional Services for Lenoir City Schools

Proposal Title : Family Literacy for a Multi-Lingual Community: Helping Parents, Helping Children (“Project HPCH”)

Abstract: Project HPHC aims to promote family literacy skills for parents and their children in Lenoir City, TN. Sharing literacy-building strategies, and building community across language and culture, parents of English Language Learners (ELLs) and native speakers of English students will become effective “literacy coaches” for their children. Project HPHC will take place from January 2013 to May 2013, consisting of ten bimonthly sessions. Data from interviews, participant-observations, and reading scores will be collected and substantiated in a published article, informing the academy, teachers, parents, and students, toward literacy-building and community cooperation.

E. Stephanie Cramer – Assistant Professor, Theory & Practice in Teacher Education With Robert Konick, UTK Professor & Director, University Assisted Community Schools: A Partnership with Knox County Schools

Abstract: Art Education 520, “Issues and Topics Current to the Field of Art Education” examines contemporary and best practice issues. This first summer session 2013 class will have graduate students working side-by-side (one-to-one) with Pond Gap Elementary students participating in the summer University Assisted Schools program. The UACS students will make art that is a topic of interest to each individual student. At the end of the semester, a final art exhibition will take place at the Beck Cultural Arts and Exchange Center on Dandridge Road that includes a reception for the students and community.

Eugene Fitzhugh – Associate Professor, Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport Studies With the Safe Routes to School Partnership/Knox County Health Department and Knox County Schools.

Proposal Title: Physical Activity Assessment in the Real World: A Safe Routes to School Learning Experience for Kinesiology Students

Abstract: This service learning project will involve undergraduate kinesiology in partnering with the Knox County Safe Routes to School Coalition in evaluating the effectiveness of a ‘Walking School Bus’ intervention designed to increase walking to schools at six area elementary schools.  The students will learn how to apply direct observation techniques in assessing physical activity as well as being exposed to direct physical activity-related interventions targeting elementary school-aged children and their parents.

Susan Groenke – Associate Professor, English Education With Kirsten Benson, Director of First-Year Composition, Marcel Browers, Director of UTK Writing Center,  and Shannon Jackson, District Supervisor of English/Language Arts Instruction, Knox County Schools.

Proposal Title: Crossing the Bridge to Academic Discourse: A Collaborative Exploration of What High School Seniors Need to Know to Write Well in First-Year-College Composition Courses

Abstract: College instructors estimate that 50% of high school graduates are not prepared for college-level writing.  Many high school seniors who graduate from Knox County Schools (KCS) attend the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UT) and take first-year composition courses.  This collaborative outreach partnership brings 12th grade KCS English teachers together with first-year composition instructors at UT to examine student writing for error patters.  The ultimate goal of the collaboration is to better understand how to prepare high school seniors for college-level writing.  Partners will work to create a 12th grade writing curriculum for KCS English teachers.

Proposal Title: Family, School, and Community Partnerships in Mathematics

Abstract: The proposed project brings together multiple stakeholders in math education together to inform and learn from each other. The project involves the design and implementation of a Family Math Night event at Central High School that will share information with parents and students about 1) high quality math teaching, 2) Common core state standards, and 3) ways to support math learning at home. This is a collaborative effort in that faculty from a local high school, UTK faculty,  and UTK graduate students will develop the event and all members of this project team will be a part of the family math night event. It is our intention that this event will expand to include other schools in the district and other more rural districts with an emphasis on building partnerships that support a culture of supporting mathematical learning.

Proposal Title: What’s in your football field? A high school outreach program using DNA sequencing as a tool to explore unseen microbial diversity in soils

Abstract: The UT Center for Environmental Biotechnology in collaboration with Oak Ridge High School propose to use the popular grass landscape known as ‘the high school football field’ as a unique outreach activity site for hands-on experimental understanding of soil microbial diversity using high-technology DNA sequencing to engage and challenge high school students across the breadth of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines.

Student Leadership & Service Ambassadors

Abstract: The Leadership & Service Ambassadors (LSAs) are a group of student leadership and service educators dedicated to serving the campus and community as a resource group. The LSAs present programs to classes, community groups and organizations on a variety of topics related to leadership & service and also strive to serve community needs through education, service & reflection. Each semester the LSA’s plan student service experiences based upon demonstrated community need. This funding will allow the LSAs to expand their community reach to serve more agencies and engage and increased number of students.

Proposal Title:
Colorectal Cancer Screening: Engaging the Community for Life

Abstract: We will engage the community in two large-scale educational seminars on the importance of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, an effective (but underused) way of saving lives. We have secured the participation of Bill Williams, a Knoxville news anchor and personality, who will be the keynote speaker at these community seminars. We have preliminary evidence for success in: 1) high attendance; 2) dissemination of educational material on CRC screening; 3) the detection of nascent cancers through screening in a Knoxville population. Dr. Kershenbaum (UTK) will conduct research on how, where and why/why not attendees follow-up with screening.
