The Association of Public and Land Grant Universities (APLU) held its winter meeting November 11-13 in New Orleans, Louisiana. This year’s theme was Resilience. The APLU is the premier gathering of senior administrators from public research and land-grant institutions. Its purpose is to address the complex challenges facing public universities and investigate the capacity of universities, their communities, and partners.
The APLU leadership of the Council on Engagement and Outreach (CEO) and Commission on Innovation, Competitiveness, and Economic Prosperity (CICEP) have been discussing integrating the two bodies into one Commission on Economic and Community Engagement (CECE). At the September and October Executive Committee meetings of CEO and CICEP, members voted to proceed with the integration. It is hoped that the APLU can encourage more campus-based partnerships by bringing together two of the association’s member bodies focused on both economic and social prosperity. CEO and CICEP have independently pursued significant work to establish the importance of university engagement in communities. Members of the two groups will now come together in partnership to increase the visibility of and investment in engagement.
