A Collaborative Community Assessment Project with the Tennessee College of Applied Technology

Associate Professor and ESM (Evaluation, Statistics, and Measurement) Program Coordinator Jennifer Ann Morrow received a Community Engagement Incentive Grant for her project “A Collaborative Partnership between the Evaluation, Statistics, and Measurement Program and Knoxville’s Tennessee College of Applied Technology.”

Morrow’s project assessed student needs at Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) by bringing 250 community members to the TCAT Knoxville Open House. Through the assessment evaluation project, TCAT Knoxville gained valuable understanding of what future attendees need and expect for career and technical education.

“The partnership created a relationship that will help strengthen TCAT Knoxville, as well as the evaluation skills of the Evaluation, Statistics, and Measurement (ESM) program students whom participated in the collaboration,” said Morrow.

The open house allowed for shared decision-making and a two-way conversation with community members. The goals of these conversations were to establish what community members knew about their local TCAT, what the community needs were for training and education, and what barriers existed to those community members for attending and earning a certificate at TCAT. The information gathered from the assessment will be used by TCAT to determine what programs students are most interested in.

Morrow said “by working together, the two institutions built a foundation where future work can be conducted to identify possible needs and best practices for current and future TCAT students.”
