Call for Submissions: William & Mary Active Citizens Conference

The conference provides a space for educating, uniting, and inspiring active citizens. The 2016 conference will be at the William and Mary School of Education in Williamsburg, VA, on Saturday, February 20th, 2016. Workshop proposals are invited and should address questions about community, social justice, and the process of social change. Deadline for proposals is January 22, 2016.

Global Health & Innovation Conference Innovation Prize

The Innovation Prize is a $10,000 and a $2,000 cash prize that is awarded to the two best social impact pitches that are presented at the 2016 Global Health & Innovation Conference held at Yale University in New Haven, CT, on April 16 –17, 2016.  The Innovation Prize supports outstanding ideas, programs, and organizations which are locally-developed and locally-responsible. Both an early stage and an established stage program will be awarded. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but available spaces are expected to become filled early.

Call for Proposals: Tennessee Conference on Volunteerism and Service-Learning

The Tennessee Conference on Volunteerism and Service-Learning will be held February 28-March 1, 2016 in Franklin, TN. The conference encourages collaboration between service leaders and participants to address needs in Tennessee while utilizing service and service-learning as a vehicle of change. The conference is accepting both showcase proposals and workshop proposals. Proposals should address service as a solution, civic leadership and service-learning, and organizational capacity building. Deadline to submit proposals is January 4, 2016.

Call for Proposals: INSPIRE 2016

INSPIRE 2016 is a student led community engagement conference to be held from March 11-13, 2016 at Siena College in Albany, NY. The conference brings over 300 people from the Northeast and across the country to engage in training and dialogue around community engagement and pedagogy through workshops, networking and presentations. This conference will feature elective workshop blocks and tracks that will explore topics such as race relations, gender, LGBTQ, and environment. Workshop design and presentation is open to anyone attending the conference. Teams of students, faculty, partners, and/or staff are especially encouraged to work together to design and present workshops. Possible topics include why and how programs and projects can build an emphasis on social justice and systemic social change, national and international social movements and initiatives, and community partnerships, service, and impact. Deadline for workshop proposals is January 8, 2016.

Kresge Foundation’s Creative Food Initiative

The Kresge Foundation seeks to support and accelerate local efforts that successfully use food as a platform for health, economic development and cultural expression, creating co-benefits for all– particularly low-income residents and families. The Foundation is especially interested in neighborhood-scale projects that have been developed with strong community engagement and leadership; prioritize equity; involve multiple sectors and disciplines; and demonstrate a high degree of readiness to implement integrated, cross-sectoral vision of food-oriented development. Kresge intends to award up to 20 planning grants of up to $75,000 each in the first quarter of 2016. Deadline to apply is January 15, 2016.

NEH Landmarks of American History and Culture: Workshops for School Teachers

This program, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), supports a series of one-week residence-based workshops for a national audience of K-12 educators. Workshops use historic sites to address central themes and issues in American history, government, literature, art, music, and related subjects in the humanities. NEH Landmarks Workshops are academically rigorous and focus on key primary sources and scholarly works relevant to major themes of American history and culture. Leading scholars should serve as lecturers or seminar leaders. Workshops should also enable participants to work with primary documents and develop a project. Deadline for applications is February 25, 2016.

The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship

The North Carolina Albert Schweitzer Fellows Program is a one-year interdisciplinary, mentored fellowship program focused on health-related community service and leadership development. The fellowship strengthens Fellows’ resolve to provide health service to underserved populations by facilitating opportunities for students to:

  • Use their skills and knowledge in real-life situations
  • Become culturally sensitive and compassionate caregivers
  • Understand the impact of social and environmental determinants of health
  • Build capacity for and commitment to improving the health status of individuals and communities as well as contributing to social change
  • Work collaboratively and across disciplines in pursuit of a common goal
  • Learn how to exercise leadership skills to work with and influence community based organizations, community leaders, and academic institutions to embrace holistic, service-oriented approaches to health

Deadline to apply is February 1, 2016.

Lemelson-MIT InvenTeams

Lemelson-MIT InvenTeams are comprised of high school students, educators, and mentors that receive up to $10,000 each to invent technological solutions to real-world problems of their own choosing. InvenTeam students rely on inquiry and hands-on problem solving as they integrate lessons from science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to develop invention prototypes. Interactive, self-directed learning coupled with STEM curricula are essential for experiencing invention. The educator applies for the grant. The educator also recruits students, monitors funds, and supports students throughout the process. The educator is advised to work with students in the spirit of self-directed learning. Initial application deadline is March 7, 2016 with the final application deadline on September 6, 2016.

The Wellstone Fellowship in Health Policy

The Wellstone Fellowship is designed to increase the number of low-income, American Indian & Alaska Native, Asian American, Black/African American, Latino, and Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander social justice leaders. Candidates seeking consideration for the Wellstone Fellowship must demonstrate an interest in using policy analysis skills to achieve health care justice and social change. Applicants should also demonstrate a commitment to contributing to social justice advocacy following their year of hands-on experience as a fellow. During the year, the fellow will learn about health reform implementation, health equity, the private insurance market, health system improvement, and other important health policy issues. At the same time, the Wellstone Fellow will develop an understanding of the tactics and strategies used in state-based consumer health advocacy organizations. Deadline for applications is February 12, 2016.

Mathematical Association of America (MAA) Mathematics Grants

The Tensor Foundation has provided funding for the MAA to award grants for projects designed to encourage college and university women or high school and middle school girls to study mathematics. Possible projects, all of which have a strong mathematics component, are to:

  • organize a club for women interested in mathematics or mathematics and science;
  • create a network of women professional mentors who will direct mathematics projects for girls;
  • hold a conference for counselors to prepare them to encourage women and girls to continue to study mathematics;
  • conduct a summer mathematics program for high school women;
  • bring high school women onto a college campus for a Math Day with follow-up;
  • structure a program for high school and/or college women to mentor younger female mathematics students with math projects or math clubs;
  • form partnerships with industry to acquaint women students with real-life applications of mathematics;
  • provide funds toward release time to allow a faculty member to prepare a course on women and mathematics, provided the host institution agrees to offer such a course.
