NIH/NINR Community Partnerships to Advance Research– R15 Academic Research Enhancement Award(AREA)

small partnersR15 AREA program will enable qualified scientists to receive support for research projects. These grants are only available for scientists at certain institutions, including UT, Knoxville. Awards may not exceed $300,000 in a 3-year period.

NIH/NINR CPAR R21 Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant

small partners The R21 mechanism is intended to encourage new exploratory and developmental research projects. These studies may involve considerable risk but may lead to a breakthrough in a particular area, or to the development of novel techniques, agents, methodologies, models, or applications that could have a major impact on a field of biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research. Awards may not exceed $200,000 in 1 year.

Mini-Grants for Civic Learning and Student Success Partnership Initiative

This initiative is grounded in the understanding that civic learning is both intrinsically important and is a powerful way to deepen students’ engagement in their own education, thereby promoting their overall success. The initiative is a team-based approach designed to support local education partnerships through an Action Summit and complementary learning communities. Teams will include representatives from colleges or universities, K-12 systems or schools, and other appropriate local entities, such as local governments, local philanthropies, and youth-serving organizations. The central purpose of the partnerships is to make experiential civic learning an expected part of students’ learning throughout school and college. Deadline to apply is September 30, 2015.

Call for Papers: Structural Violence and Community-Based Research and Action

Conceptions of structural violence can challenge community-based praxis to incorporate sophisticated analyses of injustice. The special issue on Structural Violence and Community-based Research and Action explores these possibilities through critical interrogations of diverse forms of structural and symbolic violence. Papers are invited that draw on diverse theoretical and methodological approaches to offer theoretical, empirical, and/or practice-based insights into structural violence and how it operates and/or is performed in communities. Papers from scholars, educators, practitioners, and activists engaging with and/or interrogating community-based action and research through the lens of structural violence are encouraged. Deadline for papers is January 15, 2016. 

NSF Research Experience and Mentoring Program (REM Supplements)

This grant opportunity is intended to supplement active Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation research awards. NSF seeks to encourage researchers to create carefully mentored research opportunities for people who may not otherwise become engaged in a research project and to utilize contributions and talents of these participants to make further progress toward research goals. Ideally the experience should be mutually beneficial. Research experiences are correlated with STEM success, while effective mentorship is impactful for all learners. The maximum award amount is $100,000. Deadline to apply is November 13, 2015.

Health Resources and Services Administration Nursing Workforce Diversity Program

This announcement solicits applications for the Nursing Workforce Diversity (NWD) program. The NWD program increases nursing education opportunities for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, including racial and ethnic minorities that are underrepresented among registered nurses by using social determinants to guide the selection of evidence-based approaches that have been successful in retaining students from disadvantaged backgrounds in schools of nursing. To accomplish the program goal, applicants are expected to demonstrate that a combination of academic/peer support, mentoring, institutional and community partnerships, and/or student financial support will be effectively used to retain students from disadvantaged backgrounds with low academic achievement who are at risk of failing in schools of nursing. Total program funding is $4,000,000. Deadline to apply is November 16, 2015.

American Studies Association Community Partnership Grants

The American Studies Association invites individuals and institutions to apply to the ASA Community Partnership Program for grants to support collaborative interdisciplinary community projects utilizing American Studies pedagogy, curriculum, research, and other resources. The grants will support projects developed in collaboration with community-based organizations, school districts, public libraries, local historical societies, community museums, and other non-profit entities. The grants are intended to promote American Studies practitioner collaborations with community organizations and the constituents they serve to provide new cultural and educational opportunities. Grants range from $500 to $3,000. Deadline to apply is March 1, 2016.

APF Graduate Scholarship for Projects that Reduce Stigma of Mental Illness

The APF Violet and Cyril Franks Scholarship supports graduate-level scholarly projects that use a psychological perspective to help understand and reduce stigma associated with mental illness. The scholarship helps address research, which shows that stigma is a significant barrier to treatment and recovery for many of the 50 million Americans living with mental illness. The scholarship amount is $5,000. Deadline to apply is May 15, 2016.
