The Business Education for Talented Students (BETS) program is a one-week residential curriculum designed to introduce high school students from under-represented and underserved backgrounds to the various fields of business (Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Economics, Human Resources Management, Public Administration, Enterprise Management, Logistics, and Statistics). Participants develop an executive presentation, visit a local company where they shadow the professionals, interact with business students from the University of Tennessee, and hear presentations from various professionals on campus. The program has been expanding business education since 2008.
Community partners have included Scripps Network, Boeing, McCormick, the City of Knoxville, SunTrust Bank, PepsiCo Foundation, Dixon Hughes, Lattimore, Black, Morgan and Cain (LBMC), Ruby Tuesday, and Northshore Capital Advisors. University of Tennessee, Knoxville partners include the Haslam College of Business, the Office of Admissions, and Career Services.
Impact on UT
The Business Education for Talented Students provides a pipeline of high-potential students from diverse backgrounds to UT and CBA. Students who complete the program are college-ready and already familiar with CBA offerings that will help them make better career decisions. Through 2014, more than 150 high school students have participated in BETS; 64 enrolled in UT, with 40 of those ended up majoring in business.
Impact on Community
BETS students who matriculate and major in the college contribute to a stronger, more diverse workforce. High school students who graduate from the BETS program are also exposed to a greater number of college scholarship opportunities. From BETS, new programs like the AIM Academy, which is in its second year of implementation since 2015, have developed.
